As I’m finishing reading Camus’ "The Myth of Sisyphus," I’m told that the last we see of Sisyphus is him being at the foot of the mountain, preparing to start pushing his rock once again.
As I finish reading and return to the real world, I find myself pushing my own rock.
And I find you doing the same.
This is for those who might feel that their rock has become too heavy or that the hill is too steep.
What I’m about to tell you in this short text probably won’t be anything new to you. But it is nevertheless important for me to say it to you.
If you are feeling overwhelmed and feel like all of this is too much, slow down. Change your perspective. Don’t think about how much longer you’ll need to push this rock. Don’t think about how you can't keep pushing it for that long.
Can you make one more step up that hill? If you can’t, can you at least hold the rock in place and take one more breath? And then another. And then another. Until you are able to make a tiny step forward. And then another…
I’m not trying to say that this is going to make your struggle disappear. I’m not saying that making one more step or just holding that rock for one more moment is easy.
But it is infinitely easier than allowing yourself to think about how you cannot take a thousand more steps.
I’m not saying it’s easy. But I’m asking you to try to do it. I believe you’ll find out that you can.
I’m asking you to zoom in and slow down. One step at a time, one breath a time.
Maybe that means going from thinking about how much longer you’ll have to struggle to sending a message to a friend or calling them.
Maybe the next step is "just" getting out of bed.
And maybe that one step you can make is taking the next breath.
All I’m asking of you is not to let your rock crush you.
All I’m asking of you is to keep pushing it and make just one more step.
Thank you for reading.
I love this!
Reminds me of my own philosophy with mountaineering.
If you look up, all the way to the peak it gets too overwhelming.
It seems like being too much of a challenge. But if you just look at your feet and take one step after the other, you get into a meditative state. It is less overwhelming and time flies faster.
I try to go with the same strategy through life. If it all becomes too much, just concentrate on the next step.
Step by Step.
Absolutely a beautiful message. We all need to continue pushing the rock, making the best out of it. Because if we turn back, it would all have been for nothing. Polish your rock, carry it, roll it.
Stay Happy friend =)
