What I’ve been reading:
Pure Land, Pure Mind: The Buddhism of Masters Chu-hung and Tsung-pen
This wasn’t a planned reading. I picked this one up at a used book store. It was cheap enough to give it a try, or maybe that’s just what I’m telling myself to justify my inability to leave any bookstore empty-handed.
Masters Chu-hung and Tsung-pen were 16th-century Chinese Buddhist masters.
"Pure Land” in the title stands for Pure Land Buddhism. Of the various forms of Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism is the dominant one. It’s what the general population thinks when they think about Buddhism. Well, even Mahayana Buddhism is divided into different schools. Two of the most prominent ones are Zen and Pure Land.
Considering the popularity of Zen Buddhism in the West, most people would probably be surprised to find out that Pure Land is the main form of Buddhism practiced in Asia.
For those who see in Zen Buddhism an alternative to monotheistic religions, mainly Christianity, because it seems more like secular philosophy than a religion, studying Pure Land is probably going to disappoint you. Pure Land is rooted in faith, and its main practice is the recitation of Amitabha Buddha’s name so that one might be reborn in the heavenly Pure Land.
I found this book valuable because it reminded me of my own ignorance when it comes to the Buddhist tradition. But it’s not a book that I will be studying thoroughly in the near future. Maybe I will donate it to another used book store as I keep moving.
What I’ve watched:
The Downfall of Modern Podcasts by James Smith
A straightforward, on-point critique explaining how most podcasts turn into businesses and stop being sources of genuine educational conversations.
It’s a 9-minute video. Take the time to watch it, as it might help you to start taking your favorite podcaster’s advice and recommendations with a grain of salt.
What I’ve been working on and thinking about:
Let’s get 1000 (one thousand) people unstuck
It is a beautiful coincidence that, in the past couple of weeks, there has been a massive resurgence of interest in my free training programs, and, at the same time, I had the chance to provide free in-person training to a couple of locals who have been visiting the same outdoor training spot as me.
I want to keep this momentum going, and the mission is simple: set 1000 people on the right track for free.
Next Monday, I will start rolling out daily, short, actionable email lessons on creating a sustainable routine that suits you individually and nurtures both your body and mind.
To be on the email list, all you need to do is download one of my free training programs.
