Fantastic essay. Another promise I thought of that makes me feel more self-confident is showing up for work on time. That’s a big one that makes me feel a lot more responsible and confident in myself. As for the waking up on time, that’s one I’ll definitely have to work on, and your actionable advice inspires me to first set a time I can wake up on time to and go from there.

Thank you!

This is exactly correct. Confidence is confidence in one's own self-promises. It is amazing how often this is overlooked. I myself did so for decades.

The hardest part is the suggestion you have made. Start small, then build on that foundation of small promises kept to yourself. The road ahead then becomes more clear, and that is the point many give up. Years of repeatedly doing small things just to begin to build inner strength is too much for many. But it is a necessary step.

We also have a tendency to aim for big ambitions first. Losing a lot of weight or running the marathon as you suggest. Aiming lower feels unambitious, and yet it is in fact a strenuous and difficult task, the basis of it all.

A great essay. Thank you for writing it, and sorry for the late comment. I have only just discovered you.
