What I’ve been reading:
The Evolving Self: A Psychology for the Third Millennium by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
With "The Evolving Self," I continue my study of Csikszentmihalyi’s work. This book was intended to be a follow-up to his main work, "Flow."
I would say that the main premise of the book is that we can and must become active participants in human evolution and guide it in a positive direction. A big part of how we can achieve this is, of course, by reclaiming control of where we invest our attention and energy. In the age of tiktok and 10-second attention spans, this message seems as relevant as ever.
"At this point in our history it should be possible for an individual to build a self that is not simply the outcome of biological drives and cultural habits, but a conscious, personal creation. That self will be aware of its freedom and not fear it."
What I’ve been listening to:
Lo-fi artist Tenno
Sometimes, the YouTube algorithm blesses you with a perfect recommendation. Finding Tenno was one of those instances. If you enjoy having relaxing music play in the background while working or you need a break from podcasts and audiobooks while doing house chores, I recommend you give him a listen. At the moment, my favorite is "The Guiding Wind."
You can visit Tenno’s YouTube channel here.
What I’ve been thinking about:
I think you should try to figure stuff out on your own more often.
Never has more advice been available to humans. There are literally millions of people around the world ready to give you advice on anything and everything. All you have to do is unlock your phone.
And don’t get me wrong; the amount of valuable advice you can get online and for free should invoke a sense of immense gratitude in all of us.
But if all you ever do is take advice from others, you rob yourself of the chance to really get to know yourself.
If you do something just because someone else did it and it works, in most cases, you don’t even know why it worked. You won’t know how to enhance that process in the future or fix it if needed.
If you try to figure something out on your own, whether it works or not, you receive a ton of valuable feedback.
What I’m trying to say is don’t be afraid or lazy to explore and try out different things until you find what works for you specifically.
Thank you for reading.
Stay strong, love life, and never feel sorry for yourself.
